The Gale GS401 stands as one of the most iconic British loudspeakers of the 1970s — a fusion of precision engineering and design-led hi-fi. This archive preserves the design drawings, technical data, and provenance of the GS401A, GS401B, and GS401C models, ensuring the history of Gale Electronics and its collaborators remains accessible to restorers and enthusiasts worldwide.

Styled by Jon Bannenberg under the direction of Ira Gale, the GS401 combined radical aesthetics with serious acoustic intent. David Lyth oversaw production and driver supply through Volt Loudspeakers, while Billy Woodman was involved during early development at Volt, though the extent of his direct input into the GS401’s final tuning remains uncertain. The design’s chrome end-caps, wrap-around grille, and dual-woofer sealed cabinet became a hallmark of 1970s British audio design. Each model — the GS401A (chrome), GS401B (walnut veneer), and GS401C (walnut veneer with curved grilles) — shared identical drivers and crossovers, differing only in finish.
